video review:
should we try this method to get cool videos for our ad campaigns and content
In this video, creator Elroddd explores the frustration of seeing large organizations like Getty Images charge high prices for public domain media that is already free to the public. He explains how this practice exploits the difficulty of navigating vast archives like archive.org (0:50 – 1:45).
Key Takeaways:
• The Problem: Public domain footage is often buried deep in massive, hard-to-search databases. Companies monetize the convenience of search and distribution, charging hundreds of dollars for clips that are rightfully free (1:17 – 1:45).
• The Solution: Elroddd created destockd.com to make this footage accessible. The site features over 40,000 clips ingested from the Fedflix collection, which are programmatically chopped into individual shots, visually searchable, and available for 100% free one-click downloads with no paywalls or watermarks (1:53 – 2:38).
• Functionality: The site includes a visual search tool to find similar clips, a random discovery page, and curated collections (technology, data, curios) to help users find hidden gems easily (3:00 – 3:37).
• Future Outlook: While the current library is just a fraction of available public domain content, Elroddd intends to expand by ingesting more footage from the Library of Congress, NASA, and the Smithsonian. The project is supported by his Patreon and donations, though it is intended to remain free regardless of growth (3:37 – 4:17)
